비 오는 일요일 오후, 아무 일도 일어나지 않는 방에서 시작하는 노래입니다. 「I'm wasting my time, I got nothing to do」라고 말하는 화자는 기다리는 사람이 오지 않아 시간을 통째로 흘려보내는 중입니다. 차를 몰고 너무 빨리, 너무 멀리까지 나가 봐도 시점은 바뀌지 않고, 매 절은 「But nothing ever happens, and I wonder」라는 같은 결론으로 되돌아옵니다.
제목의 레몬 나무는 그 정체 상태에 붙인 이름입니다. 어제 누군가는 파란 하늘 이야기를 해 줬는데 지금 눈에 들어오는 것은 노란 레몬 나무 한 그루뿐이라는 대비가 곡 전체를 지탱합니다. 고개를 위아래로 돌리고 몸을 계속 돌려 봐도 시야에 걸리는 건 같은 나무입니다. 「Isolation is not good for me」에 이어 「I don't want to sit on the lemon tree」라고 못 박는 대목에서, 레몬 나무는 풍경이 아니라 화자가 앉아 있는 자리, 시고 벗어나고 싶은 고립 그 자체가 됩니다. 경쾌한 기타와 「Dap-dadada」 스캣이 붙어 있어 무기력한 내용이 밝은 팝처럼 들리는 낙차도 이 곡의 오래된 매력입니다.
Fool's Garden은 1991년 독일 포르츠하임에서 결성된 밴드로, 보컬 페터 프로이덴탈러와 기타리스트 폴커 힌켈이 중심입니다. 이 곡은 두 사람이 함께 썼고, 프로이덴탈러가 오지 않는 여자친구를 기다리던 어느 일요일 오후에 만들었다고 알려져 있습니다. 가사가 곧 작곡 당시 상황의 기록인 셈입니다. 1995년 앨범 「Dish of the Day」에 실렸고 싱글은 같은 해 11월에 나왔습니다.
독일과 오스트리아를 비롯한 여러 나라에서 1위에 올랐고 대만에서도 정상을 차지하는 등 유럽과 아시아 양쪽에서 크게 퍼졌으며, 이후 40개 언어로 옮겨지고 45종에 이르는 커버 버전이 나왔습니다. 밴드에게는 이 성공이 부담이기도 했습니다. 힌켈은 후속곡에 대해 「We all realised that it was impossible to make a follow-up of the song」이라고 말했고, 밴드는 2003년 이름에서 아포스트로피를 뗀 Fools Garden 표기로 활동을 이어 갔습니다.
