2025년 2월 2일 그래미 시상식 중계 도중, 광고 시간에 난데없이 뮤직비디오가 통째로 공개됐습니다. 다음 날 정식 발매된 이 곡은 그렇게 앨범보다 먼저 세상에 나왔고, 한 달 뒤인 3월 7일에 나온 MAYHEM의 두 번째 싱글이 됐습니다.
가사는 주문 그 자체입니다. 천사에게 통행료를 내고 구름에 원을 그리라고, 악마가 돌아설 때는 거리를 잊지 말라고 지시합니다. 붉은 옷을 입은 여인이 읊는 시처럼 자기 생의 마지막 몇 마디를 듣게 되고, 홀린 듯한 춤 속에서 두 사람이 함께 트랜스에 빠집니다. 그 여인이 자기 언어로 건네는 선택지는 단 둘, 「Death or love tonight」입니다. 주문에 섞여 들어간 amor와 morta라는 조각이 각각 사랑과 죽음을 가리킨다는 걸 알고 나면, 웅얼거리는 후렴이 처음부터 그 두 단어의 반복이었다는 사실이 드러납니다.
가가는 붉은 옷의 여인을 두고 스스로 충분한 사람인지 묻는 내면의 목소리라고 설명했습니다. 발밑에서 바닥이 타오른다는 대목처럼 이 곡의 무대는 버텨 내는 자리가 아니라 그 질문과 정면으로 마주하는 자리이고, 그래서 댄스 플로어가 곧 시험대가 됩니다. 감정에 시간을 쓰지 말고 열정을 쓰되 돌아오지는 말라는 지시가 그 태도를 요약합니다.
곡은 가가와 앤드루 와트, 서킷이 함께 쓰고 만들었습니다. 수지 앤드 더 밴시스가 1981년에 낸 Spellbound를 끌어다 쓴 덕에 그 멤버들이 작곡 크레딧에 함께 올랐고, 신스팝과 애시드 테크노를 겹쳐 쌓은 밀도 높은 편곡이 나왔습니다.
빌보드 글로벌 200 5위, 미국 핫 100 13위, 영국 3위를 기록했습니다. 제68회 그래미에서는 베스트 댄스 팝 레코딩을 받았고 올해의 레코드와 올해의 노래 후보에도 올랐습니다. 가가와 패리스 고벨, 베서니 바르가스가 함께 연출한 뮤직비디오는 흰옷과 붉은 옷을 입은 두 자아가 벌이는 댄스 배틀을 담아 MTV 비디오 뮤직 어워드 연출상과 미술상을 가져갔습니다.
