곡의 발상은 2001년 알리야가 세상을 떠난 직후에 모였습니다. 앨리샤 키스는 그때가 너무 슬픈 시기여서 아무도 믿고 싶어 하지 않았고, 무엇이 중요하고 무엇이 아닌지가 선명해졌다고 말했습니다. 같은 해 9월 11일의 일과 개인적인 사건들도 얹혀, 물질적인 것은 영혼을 먹여 살리지 못한다는 이야기가 됐습니다.
가사는 열거로 시작합니다. 재산을 위해, 명성을 위해, 권력을 위해 살아가는 사람들이 차례로 호명되며 목록이 쌓입니다. 다이아몬드 반지, 영원한 젊음을 약속하는 샘, 사랑을 증명하는 유일한 방법이라는 장미 세 다스가 지나간 뒤에는, 세상을 은쟁반에 담아 건네받은들 나눌 사람이 없으면 무슨 소용이냐고 묻습니다. 그렇게 세워 둔 목록을 후렴의 「everything means nothing」 한 줄이 통째로 지웁니다.
2003년 앨범 「The Diary of Alicia Keys」에 실렸고 2004년 2월에 두 번째 싱글로 나왔습니다. 작사와 작곡은 물론 프로듀스까지 키스가 혼자 맡았습니다. 함께 작업하고 싶어 하던 크리스티나 아길레라에게 넘길 뻔한 적도 있는데, 결국 아길레라에게는 다른 곡을 써 주고 이 노래는 자기가 불렀습니다. 싱글 재킷은 만 레이의 1924년 사진 「앵그르의 바이올린」을 본떴습니다.
빌보드 핫100 최고 순위는 4위였지만 톱10에 비연속 20주를 머물러 그해 1위를 찍은 여러 곡보다 오래 남았고, 연말 결산 차트에서는 3위에 올랐습니다. R&B 힙합 송 차트에서는 비연속 6주 1위였습니다. 제47회 그래미에서는 올해의 노래 후보에 올랐고 최우수 여성 R&B 보컬 퍼포먼스를 받았습니다. 롤링스톤의 역대 최고의 노래 500에서는 440위입니다. 2023년에는 크리스 바워스와 클래식 편곡판을 만들어 유색인 여성 70명의 오케스트라와 연주했습니다.
