「Lately, I've been, I've been losing sleep」. 요즘 통 잠을 이루지 못한다는 고백이 이 곡의 출발점입니다. 뒤척이는 밤에 화자가 하는 일은 결국 무언가를 세는 것인데, 그는 세는 대상을 바꾸겠다고 선언합니다. 이제 달러를 세는 대신 별을 세겠다는 것입니다. 라이언 테더는 이 곡이 어떻게 먹고살 것인가를 걱정하며 뜬눈으로 누워 있던 밤의 심정에서 나왔다고 밝혔는데, 잠들려고 양을 세는 자리에 별을 밀어 넣은 비틀기가 그대로 제목이 되었습니다.
밝은 스트로크에 실려 있을 뿐 가사 안쪽은 훨씬 불온합니다. 「I feel something so right, doing the wrong thing」과 그 반대편 문장이 나란히 놓이면서 옳고 그름의 감각이 뒤집히고, 「Everything that kills me makes me feel alive」는 나를 죽이는 것이 나를 살아 있게 한다며 익숙한 경구를 통째로 엎어버립니다. 후반부에 계속 반복되는 「Take that money, watch it burn」은 돈을 태워 강에 가라앉히겠다는 선언이지만, 그 자리에 남는 것이 배운 교훈뿐이라는 점에서 통쾌함보다 자조에 가깝습니다.
2013년 앨범 「Native」에 실렸고 같은 해 6월 14일 싱글로 나왔습니다. 작사작곡은 라이언 테더 단독이고 프로듀싱은 테더와 노엘 잔카넬라가 함께 맡았습니다. 테더는 원리퍼블릭의 프런트맨인 동시에 밴드 밖에서 비욘세의 「Halo」, 아델의 「Rumour Has It」, 레오나 루이스의 「Bleeding Love」 같은 곡을 써온 히트메이커이기도 합니다. 자기 밴드의 노래와 남의 대표곡을 같은 손으로 만들어온 이 겸업의 이력이, 포크풍 기타 위에 대형 팝의 후렴을 얹은 이 곡의 설계에 그대로 드러납니다.
빌보드 핫 100 2위, 영국과 캐나다 싱글 차트 1위를 기록했고 미국에서는 RIAA 18배 플래티넘 인증을 받았습니다. 뮤직비디오는 2015년 11월 밴드 명의 영상으로는 처음으로 유튜브 10억 회를 넘겼습니다.
