2020년 3월 영국이 첫 봉쇄에 들어가자 커버 영상을 틱톡에 올리기 시작한 무명 가수가 그해 말 영국에서 팔로워가 가장 많은 음악가가 되었고, 2021년 3월 26일에 내놓은 곡이 이 노래입니다. 유로비전으로 이름이 알려지기 꼭 한 해 전의 곡입니다.
제목은 riot이라는 큰 단어 앞에 tiny를 붙여 만들어졌습니다. 거리를 뒤엎는 폭동이 아니라 한 사람이 혼자 시작하는 아주 작은 소요라는 뜻이고, 그래서 후렴의 명령형도 대단한 것을 요구하지 않습니다. 「Start a tiny riot / Stop being so goddamn quiet」, 조용히만 있는 것을 그만두라는 것, 가슴에 있는 불꽃을 때려서 켜라는 것이 전부입니다.
앞부분은 두려움을 장례용 장작더미에 던져 버리라거나 땅에 귀를 대고 천둥소리를 들으라는 식으로 거친 이미지가 이어집니다. 그러다 「Mother, sister, father, brother / Step into the light」에서 갑자기 호명이 시작되고, 노래가 향하는 대상이 막연한 군중에서 한 집 안의 사람들로 좁혀집니다. 스피커의 퓨즈가 나갈 때까지 볼륨을 올리고 리듬을 배우되 절대 놓치지 말라는 2절도 같은 방식으로, 저항을 거창한 구호가 아니라 손에 잡히는 행동으로 바꿔 놓습니다.
곡의 논리를 한 줄로 요약하는 것은 나비의 비유입니다. 「If butterflies can use their wings to turn the wind to hurricanes / You and I can break the chains」. 작은 날갯짓이 태풍이 된다면 우리도 사슬을 끊을 수 있다는 말인데, 쏟아지는 비를 해일로 바꿔 맞서 싸우라는 후렴의 그림과 정확히 같은 구조입니다. 그러다 브릿지에서 노래는 목소리를 낮춥니다. 「If you're drifting out to sea / You can just hold on to me / We'll make it to the other side」. 다 함께 외치던 곡이 바다로 떠내려가는 한 사람에게 손을 내미는 약속으로 좁혀지는 지점이고, 여기서 이 노래는 응원가가 아니라 동행의 노래가 됩니다.
샘 라이더는 1989년 에식스주 몰던에서 태어난 영국 가수입니다. 「Tiny Riot」은 데뷔 EP 『The Sun's Gonna Rise』에 실렸고 나중에 2022년 데뷔 앨범 『There's Nothing but Space, Man!』에도 다시 수록되었습니다. 곡은 본인과 에이미 웨이지, 맥스 볼프강이 함께 썼는데 이듬해 유로비전 출전곡 「Space Man」을 만든 것과 같은 조합입니다. 그는 2022년 유로비전 송 콘테스트에 영국 대표로 나가 466점을 얻어 심사위원 투표 1위, 최종 순위 2위를 기록했고 이는 영국 참가자 역대 최고 득점입니다. 이 EP는 발표 뒤 전 세계에서 1억 회 넘게 스트리밍되었습니다.
