파티장의 소음 속에서 한 사람만 끝까지 표정을 풀지 않습니다. 'I just came here for the drugs', 나는 그저 약 때문에 여기 왔을 뿐이라는 후렴은 들리는 그대로의 고백이라기보다, 모두가 무언가를 노리고 모인 자리에서 가식만은 끼고 싶지 않다는 선언에 가깝습니다.
도입부터 화자의 시선은 차갑습니다. 곧 졸업하고 타지로 떠난다는 상대의 말에 'interesting' 한마디로 응수하고, 포옹이 필요하냐는 제안에도 마음이 없습니다. 'I'm too busy, don't have time for things you say that aren't important', 중요하지도 않은 네 말을 들어줄 시간이 없다는 문장은 무례함이라기보다 진심 아닌 대화에 대한 피로의 표현입니다.
곡의 묘미는 화자의 목소리가 파티장의 여러 입을 흉내 내듯 옮겨 다닌다는 데 있습니다. 새 아우디를 자랑하지만 혼자 와서 운전도 못 할 만큼 취해버린 누군가, 작년에 만난 사람을 아느냐며 떠보는 누군가가 스쳐 갑니다. 마지막 절의 'Everybody's either here for the drugs, or the sex or the money or the fame', 다들 약이나 섹스나 돈이나 명성 때문에 왔다는 진단에 이르면, 약은 더 이상 약물 그 자체가 아니라 공허를 잠시 덮는 모든 도피의 대명사로 읽힙니다.
UPSAHL은 애리조나 피닉스 출신의 싱어송라이터로, 다섯 살에 기타와 피아노를 시작한 정통 훈련을 거쳤습니다. 본인 작업과 별개로 두아 리파의 'Good in Bed', 매디슨 비어의 'BOYSHIT' 같은 곡을 함께 쓴 작가이기도 합니다. 화려한 사교의 한복판에서 느끼는 단절을 한 발 물러나 관찰하는 이 곡의 시선은, 가사를 짓는 사람 특유의 거리감과 잘 어울립니다.
