19세기 뉴질랜드 포경선 위에서 불리던 뱃노래가 200년 가까운 시간을 건너 다시 울려 퍼진 곡입니다. 'Wellerman'은 오타고 지역에 정착한 초기 유럽 상인 웰러 형제가 포경 기지에 설탕·차·럼 같은 보급품을 실어 나르던 보급선을 가리키는데, 노래 속 선원들은 그 배가 오기만을 기다립니다.
이야기는 '빌리 오브 티(Billy of Tea)'라는 배가 출항하면서 시작됩니다. 거대한 고래를 발견하고 선장이 '저 고래를 끌고 오겠다'고 맹세하지만, 고래는 좀처럼 잡히지 않습니다. '40일이 넘도록 / 줄은 늘어졌다 다시 팽팽해지고 / 배는 모두 잃고 넷만 남았지만 / 그래도 고래는 계속 헤엄쳤다'라며, 인간과 고래의 사투는 끝없이 이어집니다.
후렴 '곧 웰러맨이 오겠지 / 우리에게 설탕과 차와 럼을 가져다주러 / 혀 작업이 끝나는 그날엔 / 우린 떠나 집으로 가리'는 고된 노동 속에서 보급선과 귀향을 기다리는 선원들의 마음을 담습니다. 마지막 절의 '내가 듣기로 싸움은 아직도 진행 중 / 줄은 끊기지 않았고 고래도 떠나지 않았다'에 이르면, 끝나지 않는 노동을 묵묵히 견디는 정조가 곡 전체에 깔립니다.
