로제(ROSE)곡 소개
끝난 뒤에도 끝나지 않은 관계를 다룬 노래입니다. 첫 줄부터 화자는 변명을 접습니다. 「Call us what we are / Toxic from the start」. 상대가 질투가 많고 소유욕이 강하며 사람을 조종한다는 걸 알면서도, 자기가 그 판에 참가자로 앉아 있었다는 사실까지 함께 인정합니다. 스스로를 피해자로만 그리지 않는다는 점이 이 곡의 태도입니다.
정수는 후렴의 단어 하나가 바뀌는 자리에 있습니다. 첫 후렴에서 화자는 그 집을 뛰쳐나오며 다시는 네 얼굴을 보고 싶지 않다고 말했고, 「And then」 곧바로 다시 보고 싶어 견딜 수 없었다고 이어 붙입니다. 두 번째 후렴에서는 같은 자리가 「I meant」으로 바뀝니다. 그때 한 말이 사실은 정반대를 뜻했다는 자백이라, 이별 서사가 한순간에 자기기만의 고백으로 뒤집힙니다.
중반에는 화자가 무대 사회자처럼 나서서 「Ladies & Gentleman / I present to you, the ex」라며 전 연인을 소개합니다. 그가 가장 좋아하는 게임이 체스라는 대목은 곧바로 「Playing with the pieces in my chest」로 이어지는데, 농담처럼 던져 놓고 실제로는 사람 마음을 말처럼 옮겨 두던 상대를 그린 문장입니다. 마지막에 남는 계산서도 물건이 아닙니다. 티파니 반지를 돌려주지 않은 것까지는 용서해도 「You wasted my prettiest years」만은 용서할 수 없다고 못을 박습니다.
로제가 2024년 12월 6일 발표한 첫 정규 앨범 「rosie」의 수록곡으로, 로제와 Michael Pollack, Emily Warren, Evan Blair가 함께 썼고 Evan Blair가 프로듀싱했습니다. 작업 초기 제목은 The Ex였습니다. 기타와 신시사이저를 겹친 이모 팝 계열 사운드이며, 발매 주 빌보드 핫 100에 진입하면서 로제는 K팝 여성 솔로 가수로는 처음으로 핫 100에 두 곡을 동시에 올렸습니다. 빌보드 글로벌 200과 미국 제외 글로벌 차트에서도 상위권에 들었고, 뮤직비디오는 뉴욕 올드 웨스트버리 가든스에서 촬영됐습니다.
