Alice Merton곡 소개
스물네 해 동안 열두 번 이사한 사람이 그 이력을 그대로 곡으로 옮긴 경우입니다. 앨리스 머튼은 캐나다와 독일, 영국을 오가며 자랐고, 어느 시점에 돌아갈 한 곳이 자신에게 없다는 사실을 자각한 뒤 이 곡을 썼습니다. 당시 몹시 길을 잃은 기분이었기에 기분이 나아질 만한 노래를 쓰기로 했다고 본인은 설명한 바 있습니다.
그래서 첫 장면이 구덩이입니다. 구덩이를 파고 그 안에 물건을 숨겨 두는 걸 좋아하는데, 나이가 들었을 때 그것들을 찾아내는 걸 잊지 않았으면 좋겠다는 것. 소유가 아니라 표식을 남기는 방식입니다. 이어지는 절에서는 집을 짓고 누군가 그것을 허물어 주기를 기다린 뒤 상자에 담아 다음 도시로 향한다고 말하는데, 헤어짐을 예정에 넣고 정착하는 사람의 습관이 한 문장 안에 들어 있습니다.
후렴은 뿌리가 없다는 선언과 「my home was never on the ground」라는 한 줄로 이루어져 있습니다. 결핍의 고백처럼 들리지만 머튼의 설명은 반대입니다. 자신의 집은 애초에 땅 위에 있었던 적이 없고 사랑하는 사람들 곁에 있었으며, 그 깨달음이 이 곡의 밝은 부분이 됐다는 것입니다. 어두운 문장을 얹고도 후렴이 신나게 굴러가는 이유가 여기에 있습니다.
두 번째 절은 그 상태를 담담하게 확인합니다. 가만히 있는 걸 좋아한다고 말해 보지만 그건 희망 사항일 뿐이고, 어디서 왔느냐고 물으면 매번 다른 땅을 대답하게 됩니다. 게이트와 번호를 세며 추측 놀이를 하는 공항의 일상이 뒤따르고, 바뀌는 건 장소뿐 나머지는 그대로라는 문장이 결론을 대신합니다. 이동은 끝나지 않지만 그 안의 자신은 흔들리지 않는다는 뜻입니다.
이 곡은 2016년 12월 유럽에서 먼저 나왔습니다. 소규모 독립 레이블 페이퍼 플레인 레코즈에서 발매됐고 니콜라스 렙셔가 공동 작곡과 프로듀싱을 맡았는데, 단번에 터진 곡이 아니라 몇 달에 걸쳐 서서히 번졌습니다. 이후 독일 2위와 오스트리아 3위, 아이슬란드 1위에 오르고 미국에서도 빌보드 핫 록 앤드 얼터너티브 송 차트 5위를 기록했으며, 독일과 이탈리아에서는 더블 플래티넘 인정을 받았습니다.
