Panic! At The Disco곡 소개
야자수와 수영장, 사막 하늘, 노을빛에 물든 화이트 와인. 후렴이 펼쳐 놓는 로스앤젤레스는 거의 관광 엽서에 가깝습니다. 그런데 그 그림은 같은 후렴 안에서 곧바로 뒤집힙니다. 이어지는 몇 줄에서 이 사람은 할리우드의 광채 앞에 보이지 않는 존재이고, 시간을 조금이라도 더 벌어 보려고 계속 쫓기는 중입니다. 반짝이는 도시와 그 도시에 갈려 나가는 사람이 한 덩어리로 붙어 있습니다.
제목의 데보티는 신자, 헌신하는 사람을 가리키는 말입니다. 도시를 향한 애정을 종교의 어휘로 옮겨 놓은 셈인데, 정작 곡이 그 앞에 매번 붙이는 수식은 그저 또 한 명이라는 말입니다. 이 도시의 신자가 특별할 것 없고 얼마든지 갈아 끼울 수 있는 존재라는 사실을, 후렴이 스스로 실토하는 구조입니다. 멀홀랜드 드라이브를 검은 마법이라 부르고 야자수가 상대의 이름을 부르며 운다고 적는 식으로, 곡은 실재하는 지명과 풍경 위에 주술의 어휘를 겹쳐 올립니다.
두 개의 벌스는 거의 같은 문장을 반복하면서 조동사 하나만 바꿉니다. 처음에 화자는 상대를 바꾸지 않겠다고, 떠나게 만들려 하지도 않겠다고 말합니다. 두 번째에는 바꿀 수 없었다고, 알아듣게 만들 수도 없었다고 말합니다. 하지 않기로 한 것이 할 수 없는 것으로 넘어가는 이 한 칸의 이동이 곡의 실제 줄거리입니다. 별자리를 읊는 대목도 짝을 이뤄 바뀌어, 중서부에서 불어오던 바람이 도심의 폭풍으로 자리를 옮깁니다. 밖에서 흘러들어온 사람이 도시에 완전히 붙박이는 과정이 문법 한 칸으로 표시돼 있는 셈입니다.
곡은 2015년 추수감사절에 다섯 번째 앨범 「Death of a Bachelor」의 첫 선공개 곡으로 나왔습니다. 브렌든 유리와 화이트 시, 제이크 싱클레어가 함께 썼고 싱클레어가 프로듀싱을 맡았습니다. 자료들은 이 곡을 유리 본인의 로스앤젤레스 애착에서 나온 노래로 소개합니다. 발표 시점도 곡의 결에 얹힙니다. 2015년 4월 드러머 스펜서 스미스가 정식으로 탈퇴하고 베이시스트마저 투어 멤버로 물러나면서 패닉! 앳 더 디스코는 사실상 유리 한 사람의 프로젝트가 됐고, 이 앨범이 그 체제로 만든 첫 작품입니다. 2004년 라스베이거스에서 네 명으로 출발한 밴드가 열한 해 만에 혼자 남은 자리에서, 도시에 붙들린 한 사람의 이야기를 부른 셈입니다.
앨범은 빌보드 200 1위로 데뷔해 밴드의 첫 1위이자 최고 판매 주간을 기록했고 미국에서 2배 플래티넘 인증을 받았습니다. 이 곡 자체도 빌보드 핫 록 송 15위에 오르며 미국 플래티넘, 캐나다와 뉴질랜드 골드, 영국 실버 인증을 받았습니다. 2016년 9월 나온 뮤직비디오에는 넷플릭스 「기묘한 이야기」의 윌 바이어스 역으로 알려진 아역 노아 슈납이 출연했는데, 매끈하게 반짝이는 곡의 표면과 어긋나는 어둡고 불길한 화면으로 채워져 있습니다. 곡이 처음부터 안쪽에 품고 있던 이면을 영상 쪽에서 한 번 더 확인해 주는 셈입니다.
