이 곡의 뼈대는 남의 것입니다. 1981년 소프트 셀이 부른 Tainted Love, 그리고 그 원곡을 1960년대에 쓴 에드 코브의 이름이 작곡 크레딧에 함께 올라 있습니다. 프로듀서 J.R. 로템은 Tainted Love를 듣고 그 베이스라인을 가져와 새로운 스윙으로 갱신하고 싶었다고 밝혔습니다. 그렇게 뽑아낸 두 마디 루프가 곡 전체를 끌고 갑니다. 원래는 크리스티나 밀리안의 앨범에 실릴 예정이었다가 거절당한 트랙을 L.A. 리드가 리아나에게 넘긴 것이기도 합니다.

2006년 2월 발표된 이 곡은 리아나에게 첫 빌보드 핫 100 1위를 안겼고 5월부터 3주 연속 정상을 지켰습니다. 미국 댄스 클럽 송과 메인스트림 톱 40에서도 1위에 올랐으며 호주에서는 8주 연속 1위를 기록했습니다. 데뷔 싱글 Pon de Replay로 이름을 알린 지 1년이 채 되지 않은 시점이었습니다. 공식 뮤직비디오 외에 나이키와 에이전트 프로보카퇴르 광고를 위한 버전까지 세 종류가 만들어졌다는 점도 이 곡에 걸려 있던 기대를 보여 줍니다.
