시작은 음악 소프트웨어에 딸려 있던 드럼 루프였습니다. 2007년 1월 애틀랜타의 작업실에서 트리키 스튜어트가 묵직한 하이햇 소리를 찾아냈고, 옆에 있던 더드림이 그 소리에 홀려 곧장 부스로 들어갔습니다. 스튜어트가 코드를 얹는 동안 더드림은 첫 절을 1분 만에 써냈고, 몇 시간 만에 데모가 완성됐습니다.
그런데 이 데모가 리한나에게 곧장 간 것은 아닙니다. 두 사람은 당시 사생활이 흔들리던 브리트니 스피어스의 재기용 곡을 염두에 뒀지만 소속 레이블이 거절했고, 영국 가수 타이오 크루즈에게도 넘어갔다가 그의 회사가 발매를 마다했습니다. 그다음에는 그래미 시즌을 앞둔 메리 제이 블라이지 쪽으로 기우는 듯했는데, 그가 일정에 쫓겨 곡을 끝까지 듣지 못하는 사이 데프잼의 L.A. 리드가 끼어들어 판을 가져왔습니다. 데모를 받은 리한나는 당장 내일 녹음하겠다고 답했습니다.
가사의 장치는 비와 우산입니다. 제이지의 도입부는 곤궁한 날을 대비해 저축한다는 영어 관용구를 재산 이야기로 끌고 가면서 자신을 비의 사나이로, 리한나를 작은 햇살로 부릅니다. 뒤이어 나오는 본절은 방향을 뒤집습니다. 어둠 속에서는 번쩍이는 차가 보이지 않으니 그때 필요한 사람이 자기라는 것입니다. 「You can stand under my umbrella」라는 후렴과 끝음절을 늘여 붙이는 반복이 곡의 얼굴이 되었습니다.
2007년 3월 29일 「Good Girl Gone Bad」의 첫 싱글이자 첫 트랙으로 나왔습니다. 영국에서는 그해의 폭우와 겹치며 10주 연속 1위로 그 시기 최장 기록을 세웠고 미국에서도 7주 동안 정상을 지켰습니다. 이듬해 그래미에서 랩과 보컬 협업 부문을 받았고 올해의 레코드와 노래 후보에도 올랐습니다. 은색 페인트를 바른 크리스 애플바움의 영상은 그해 MTV 시상식에서 올해의 비디오로 뽑혔습니다.
