Maneskin곡 소개
2021년 5월 마네스킨이 유로비전 송 콘테스트에서 「Zitti e buoni」로 우승한 뒤, 정작 세계 차트를 뒤집은 것은 4년 전에 녹음해둔 커버 한 곡이었습니다. Beggin'은 틱톡을 타고 번지면서 그해 7월 스포티파이 글로벌 톱50 1위에 올랐고, 빌보드 핫100 13위와 영국 싱글차트 6위를 기록했습니다. 이 과정에서 마네스킨은 이탈리아 밴드로는 처음으로 영국 싱글차트 톱10에 두 곡을 동시에 올린 팀이 됐습니다.
원곡은 1967년 미국 그룹 더 포 시즌스가 발표한 노래로, 밥 고디오와 페기 파리나가 썼고 빌보드 핫100 16위에 올랐습니다. 2007년에는 노르웨이 듀오 매드콘의 버전이 노르웨이와 프랑스, 네덜란드 등에서 1위를 차지하며 한 차례 되살아났습니다. 마네스킨은 2017년 X팩터 이탈리아 시즌 11 무대에서 이 곡을 부른 뒤 데뷔 EP 『Chosen』에 담았는데, 그때만 해도 이탈리아 싱글차트 39위에 머물렀습니다.
노랫말은 몰락한 사람이 붙잡는 마지막 자세를 그립니다. 「Riding high, when I was king」이라며 다 가졌던 시절을 먼저 세워두고, 「An empty shell, I used to be」라며 껍데기만 남은 현재를 그 옆에 붙입니다. 그 사이에는 경고를 듣고도 제 발로 걸어 나갔다는 자기 진술이 놓여 있어서, 지금의 처지가 남 탓이 아니라는 것을 화자 스스로 인정하고 있습니다.
그래서 후렴은 화해도 재회도 요구하지 않습니다. 「I'm on my knees when I'm beggin'」처럼 자세를 낮춘 채, 바라는 것이라고는 「Put your loving hand out, baby」 손 하나 내밀어달라는 것뿐입니다. 같은 문장이 곡이 끝날 때까지 계속 반복되는데, 애원이 길어질수록 답이 오지 않고 있다는 사실만 또렷해집니다.
마네스킨판의 성격은 편곡에서 갈립니다. 1960년대 소울 넘버를 거친 기타와 앞으로 밀어붙이는 리듬 위로 옮겨놓고, 벌스 일부는 랩에 가까운 호흡으로 흘려보냅니다. 「What we doing? What we chasing?」처럼 질문만 던지고 답하지 않는 대목이 그런 자리인데, 덕분에 애원의 노래가 자기 파괴에 가까운 에너지로 읽히게 됐습니다. 반세기 전의 곡이 유로비전 우승 밴드의 손을 거쳐 다시 전 세계 차트에 오른, 흔치 않은 사례로 남았습니다.
