Imagine Dragons곡 소개
이매진 드래곤스의 보컬 댄 레이놀즈는 2015년 강직성 척추염 진단 사실을 공개했습니다. 척추 관절에 염증이 생기는 자가면역 질환입니다. 2017년 이 곡을 내놓으면서 그는 곡의 출발점이 그 통증이었다고 말했습니다. 고통이 자신을 믿는 사람으로 만들었고 스스로와 자신의 작업을 믿게 했으며, 고통이 없었다면 자신의 예술도 없었을 것이라는 이야기였습니다.
가사는 그 말을 그대로 구조로 옮겨 놓았습니다. First things first, second thing second, third things third, last things last. 항목을 세듯 순서를 붙여 가며 화자는 머릿속에 있던 말을 전부 꺼내겠다고 선언하고, 내가 어떤 사람이 될 수 있는지를 남이 정하지 말라고 잘라 말합니다. 「I'm the one at the sail, I'm the master of my sea」, 돛을 잡은 것도 이 바다의 주인도 나라는 문장이 그 선언의 정점입니다.

Pain. 후렴마다 통증이 먼저 튀어나오고 그 뒤에 「You made me a believer」가 붙습니다. 통증이 나를 부수고 다시 세운다는 것, 내 삶과 사랑과 추진력이 전부 거기서 나왔다는 것. 어린 시절부터 부서져 있었고 군중 속에서 숨이 막혔고 재가 되어 떨어지듯 가라앉으며 감정이 익사하기를 바랐지만, 그것들은 끝내 죽지 않고 갇힌 채로 밀물과 썰물처럼 흐르다 마침내 터져 비처럼 쏟아졌다는 대목이 그 과정을 압축합니다. 고통을 견디는 대상이 아니라 자신을 만든 재료로 다시 정의하는 것이 이 곡이 하는 일입니다.
2017년 2월 1일 공개돼 세 번째 정규 앨범 「Evolve」의 선행 싱글이 된 이 곡은 밴드 멤버 네 명과 저스틴 트랜터, 알렉스 다 키드, 프로듀서 듀오 매트맨 앤 로빈이 함께 썼고 프로듀싱은 매트맨 앤 로빈이 맡았습니다. 빌보드 핫 100 4위에 올랐고 핫 록 앤 얼터너티브 송 차트에서는 29주 동안 1위를 지켰으며, 그해 미국에서 다섯 번째로 많이 팔린 노래가 됐습니다. 발을 구르는 듯한 리듬과 굵은 신스로 밀어붙이는 소리 자체가, 통증을 무기로 바꾸겠다는 가사의 태도와 같은 방향을 가리킵니다.
