DAVE RODGERS곡 소개
데이브 로저스는 이탈리아 만토바 출신의 뮤지션이며 본명은 잔카를로 파스퀴니입니다. 1980년대에는 이탈로 디스코와 유로비트를 대표하던 밴드 알레프의 보컬로 활동했고, 1990년에는 알베르토 콘티니와 함께 레이블 A-BEAT C를 세워 2010년까지 운영했습니다. 유럽에서 만들어져 일본 시장에서 소비된 유로비트라는 장르의 생리를 이해하려면 이 이력이 먼저 필요합니다.
「DEJA VU」는 1999년에 나왔고 컴필레이션 『SUPER EUROBEAT presents EUROMACH 2』에 실렸습니다. 확장 믹스는 훗날 『SUPER EUROBEAT presents 頭文字D SUPER EURO BEST』에 수록됐습니다. 애니메이션 『이니셜 D』 세컨드 스테이지의 배틀 장면에 쓰이면서 곡의 이름이 훨씬 넓은 곳까지 퍼졌고, 유로비트라는 장르가 일본 바깥의 청자에게 알려지는 데에도 이 작품이 큰 몫을 했습니다.
가사는 이야기를 진행시키는 대신 감각의 잔상만 남깁니다. 달빛 속에 비친 몸, 지우려 해도 머릿속에 계속 인화되는 장면들, 눈앞에서 번쩍이는 섬광이 앞부분을 채웁니다. 허구가 알아서 다시 돌아간다는 「the fiction is gonna run it again」 같은 표현은 통제권이 화자에게 없다는 사실을 분명히 합니다.
곡의 중심에는 「Déjà vu, I've just been in this place before」라는 한 줄이 있습니다. 이 자리에 와본 적이 있다는 감각은 다음 후렴에서 「I've just been in this time before」로 바뀌어 장소가 시간으로 옮겨 가고, 「Higher on the street」와 「Higher on the beat」가 짝을 이루며 달리는 도로와 곡의 박자를 겹쳐 놓습니다. 그리고 매번 「it's so hard when I try to be me」로 끝맺습니다. 자기 자신이 되는 일이 가장 어렵다는 이 마무리가, 같은 코너를 몇 번이고 다시 도는 심야 산길의 반복과 맞물립니다.
