「Do you like my car?」 한마디로 문을 열고, 그 뒤로는 액셀을 밟겠다는 말만 반복합니다. 오늘 밤 날아오르겠다, 섬광처럼 빠르겠다, 네 영웅이 되겠다. 서사랄 것이 거의 없고 차와 속도와 상대를 향한 과열된 선언만 남는데, 유로비트라는 장르가 요구하는 것이 정확히 그것입니다.
유로비트는 이탈리아에서 만들어져 일본에서 소비된 기묘한 장르입니다. 1990년 에이벡스가 새로 세워진 이탈리아 레이블 A-Beat-C와 손잡고 『Super Eurobeat』 컴필레이션 시리즈를 시작하면서, 이탈리아 프로듀서들이 일본 시장을 향해 곡을 찍어내는 구조가 자리를 잡았습니다. 이 곡도 2007년 그 시리즈를 통해 나왔고, MANUEL은 A-Beat-C에서 활동한 이탈리아 가수 겸 프로듀서 마누엘 카라모리의 활동명입니다.
장르를 대중에게 각인시킨 것은 주행 만화 「이니셜 D」였습니다. 애니메이션과 아케이드 게임이 유로비트를 배틀 장면의 표준 사운드로 쓰면서 곡과 자동차가 사실상 한 몸이 되었고, 「Gas Gas Gas」는 Fifth Stage와 아케이드 게임 Arcade Stage 5에 실리며 그 계보에 들어갔습니다. 액셀을 밟겠다는 가사가 문자 그대로 화면과 맞물리는 흔치 않은 사례입니다.
정작 이 곡을 전 세계에 알린 것은 그다음 단계였습니다. 2016년 말부터 2017년에 걸쳐 유튜브에서 자동차 영상이나 게임 장면에 이 곡을 얹는 패러디가 폭발적으로 늘었고, 초기 영상 하나만으로 수백만 회 재생을 넘겼습니다. 노래방 목록에 팝송으로 올라 있지만 실제 이력은 이탈리아에서 제작되고 일본 애니메이션에서 상징이 된 뒤 인터넷에서 다시 태어난, 세 번 국적을 바꾼 곡에 가깝습니다.
