「Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?」 반주 없이 겹쳐 쌓은 목소리가 던지는 이 두 마디로 곡이 열립니다. 산사태에 휩쓸려 현실에서 달아날 곳이 없다던 화자는 곧 어머니를 부르며 방금 사람을 죽였다고 고백하고, 이제 막 시작된 삶을 제 손으로 내던졌다고 말합니다. 죄와 형벌이라는 겉이야기는 분명한데 정작 무엇을 죽인 것인지는 끝까지 밝혀지지 않아, 이 곡은 반세기 가까이 해석이 열린 채로 남아 있습니다.
6분에 가까운 러닝타임 동안 되풀이되는 후렴이 하나도 없다는 점이 이 곡의 골격입니다. 아카펠라 도입과 피아노 발라드, 기타 솔로, 오페라 패러디, 하드록, 그리고 잦아드는 코다가 이어 붙어 하나의 모음곡을 이룹니다. 작사작곡은 프레디 머큐리 단독이며, 본인은 「내가 내놓고 싶던 세 곡을 그냥 하나로 붙인 것」이라고 설명했습니다. 스카라무슈와 판당고, 갈릴레오, 피가로, 베엘제붑이 쏟아지는 중간부는 오페라의 어휘를 빌려와 화자를 세워둔 재판정처럼 굴러갑니다.
1975년 8월부터 9월까지 다섯 개 스튜디오를 옮겨 다니며 녹음했고, 오페라 구간에만 180회에 이르는 오버더빙이 쌓였습니다. 24트랙 테이프를 8세대까지 바운스한 탓에 브라이언 메이는 빛에 비추면 테이프 너머가 비쳐 보일 만큼 닳아 있었다고 회고했습니다.
같은 해 10월 31일 「A Night at the Opera」의 리드 싱글로 나왔습니다. 라디오에 걸기엔 지나치게 길다는 당시의 싱글 관행을 정면으로 뚫고 영국 싱글 차트 9주 1위에 올랐고, 1991년 머큐리가 세상을 떠난 뒤 5주를 더 채웠습니다. 미국에서는 1976년 9위에 그쳤다가 1992년 영화 「Wayne's World」에 쓰이며 2위까지 올라섰고, 2018년 동명 전기 영화 이후에는 20세기에 발표된 곡 가운데 가장 많이 스트리밍된 곡이 되었습니다.
결말은 승리도 구원도 아닙니다. 「Nothing really matters」를 되뇌다 첫 절에 있던 말, 바람이 어디로 불든 내겐 상관없다는 그 체념이 조용히 되돌아오며 요란했던 재판은 판결 없이 흩어집니다.
