2024년 롤드컵을 위해 만들어진 곡입니다. 라이엇 게임즈가 해마다 세계 챔피언십에 붙이는 주제가를 그해에는 린킨 파크가 맡았고, 대회 개막 직전인 9월 24일 공개됐습니다. 왕관은 무겁다는 제목은 왕좌를 지키는 쪽의 부담을 가리키는 오래된 관용에서 왔는데, 프로 선수들이 디펜딩 챔피언의 성을 향해 몰려가는 애니메이션 뮤직비디오가 그 제목을 그대로 그림으로 옮겨 놓습니다.
가사는 왕관을 쓴 자와 그것을 노리는 자를 한 화자 안에 겹쳐 놓습니다. 전쟁이 시작되는데 백기를 들고 있으면 이길 수 없다는 문장으로 시작해, 「Aimin' so high, but swingin' so low」처럼 목표와 실행이 어긋난 상태, 불을 붙이려는데 정작 몸은 차갑다는 모순이 이어집니다. 안으로 삼키고 들키지 않기를 바라지만 사실은 아니라는 걸 스스로 안다는 자백이 벌스의 결론입니다.
후렴이 던지는 「This is what you asked for」는 위로가 아니라 확인입니다. 네가 원한 자리가 이거였다고 못을 박고 일출에 불이 붙고 재가 쏟아지는 풍경을 그 위에 올립니다. 참으려 해도 계속 새어 나온다는 한 줄이 반복될수록 왕관은 영광의 표시에서 지혈되지 않는 상처 쪽으로 기울고, 열 대 하나로 수적 열세에 몰렸다는 두 번째 벌스가 그 기울기를 굳힙니다. 칼을 휘두르지만 펜은 빗나가지 않는다는 구절까지 오면, 싸움의 상대가 링 밖의 말들이라는 것도 드러납니다.
이 곡은 밴드가 새 체제로 내놓은 초기 결과물이기도 합니다. 여덟 번째 정규 앨범 『From Zero』의 두 번째 싱글로, 리드 보컬은 2024년 합류한 에밀리 암스트롱이 맡았고 드럼은 콜린 브리테인이 앉았으며 마이크 시노다가 프로듀서로 전체를 조율했습니다. 발매 이틀 전 함부르크 공연에서 처음 라이브로 연주되며 새 라인업의 성격을 공개적으로 확인시켰습니다.
성적은 록 라디오에서 가장 선명했습니다. 미국 얼터너티브 에어플레이 1위로 밴드 통산 일곱 번째 정상을 기록했고 빌보드 글로벌 200 14위, 영국 싱글 차트 18위에 올랐으며 독일과 오스트리아, 스위스에서는 톱3에 들었습니다. 이후 『아케인』 시즌 2 사운드트랙에 재녹음 버전이 실리면서 게임 바깥에서도 수명을 늘렸습니다.
