출발점은 셸백이 만든 데모였습니다. 휘파람 훅과 「moves like Jagger」라는 문구가 이미 그 안에 들어 있었고, 벤 블랑코를 거쳐 애덤 리바인에게 전해졌습니다. 리바인은 곡을 마음에 들어 하며 완성해 자기 목소리로 불렀습니다. 제목의 재거는 롤링 스톤스의 믹 재거이고, 리바인은 그의 움직임이 아무도 흉내 낼 수 없이 고유하면서 동시에 우스꽝스럽고 즐겁다는 점을 좋아한다고 밝혔습니다. 재거 본인은 이 발상을 대단히 영광스럽게 받아들였다고 전해집니다.
가사의 화자는 처음부터 끝까지 자기 몸을 무기로 씁니다. 별을 향해 쏘라고, 마음이 내키면 자기 심장을 겨누라고 부추기고, 통제권을 원한다기에 기다려 줬더니 이제 자기는 다 벗은 상태라고 말합니다. 애 같고 자만이 심하다는 지적에는 알 바 아니라고 대꾸합니다. 억지로 조종할 필요도 없이 눈만 마주치면 상대를 가질 수 있다고 반복하는데, 그 근거는 오직 춤 하나뿐입니다. 흥미로운 건 그 사이에 잠깐 끼어드는 다정함입니다. 부서지고 흉터가 남아 아무것도 제대로 느껴지지 않을 때 자기와 함께라면 믿게 해 주겠다는 대목이 있어서, 이 허세가 순전한 과시로만 굳지 않습니다.
크리스티나 아길레라의 참여는 그 허세를 눌러 주는 장치였습니다. 리바인은 여성 보컬과 목소리를 나누면 건방짐이 조금 깎일 것이라 봤다고 말했습니다. 아길레라는 브리지에서 자기 데뷔곡 Genie in a Bottle을 슬쩍 끌어와 겹쳐 놓습니다. 두 사람은 당시 오디션 프로그램 The Voice의 코치였고, 곡은 2011년 6월 21일 그 방송에서 처음 공개됐습니다.
