「나를 죽이지 못하는 것은 나를 더 강하게 만든다」. 니체에게서 온 이 문장은 너무 자주 인용된 나머지 거의 닳아 버린 말입니다. 작사에 참여한 알리 탐포시는 어머니가 삶의 조언이라며 이 말을 건넸을 때 오히려 느끼하다고 느꼈다고 밝혔습니다. 곡은 그 닳은 격언을 그대로 가져다 쓰되, 허공에 대고 하는 좋은 말이 아니라 특정한 한 사람을 향한 반박문으로 바꿔 놓는 데서 출발합니다.
첫 줄부터 상대가 없는 침대가 더 따뜻하다고 말합니다. 혼자 자니 꿈을 컬러로 꾸고 하고 싶은 걸 한다는 것입니다. 이어지는 절은 전부 상대의 오해를 하나씩 되받는 형식입니다. 네가 나를 이겼다고, 마지막에 웃은 건 너라고, 좋은 건 다 사라졌다고, 내가 무너져서 결국 달려 돌아올 거라고 생각하겠지만 너는 나를 모른다는 것입니다. 후렴의 핵심은 강해졌다는 선언 자체가 아니라 그 뒤에 붙는 단서 두 줄입니다. 혼자 있다고 해서 외로운 것은 아니고, 네가 없다고 해서 내가 끝난 것도 아니라는 말. 강함을 증명하는 대신 외로움과 종결을 부인하는 방식이라, 이 노래는 승리보다 방어에 가깝게 들립니다.
그 방어가 공격으로 넘어가는 지점이 브리지입니다. 「Thanks to you」를 세 번 반복하면서 네 덕분에 새로 시작했고, 네 덕분에 상심에서 벗어났고, 네 덕분에 마침내 나를 생각하게 됐다고 말합니다. 그리고 네가 떠난 날이 결국 내 시작이었다는 한 줄로 관계의 시간표를 통째로 뒤집습니다. 상처를 준 사람을 감사의 대상으로 재배치하는 이 마무리가 곡을 흔한 이별 노래에서 떼어 놓습니다.
