파티 걸은 상처받지 않는다는 문장으로 곡이 시작합니다. 아무것도 느껴지지 않는데 대체 언제쯤 배우게 될까 하고 스스로에게 묻고는, 그 물음을 곧바로 눌러 내립니다. 놀고 싶을 때 걸려 오는 전화를 사랑이라 부르는 착각, 그리고 후렴 직전 「One, two, three, drink」를 세 번 반복하다 결국 세는 걸 놓쳐 버리는 대목이 이 노래의 성격을 요약합니다.
샹들리에에 매달려 흔들리겠다는 선언은 화려해 보이지만 바로 다음 문장에서 뒤집힙니다. 내일이 없는 것처럼 살겠다, 새처럼 밤을 가로질러 날겠다는 말 뒤에 「But I'm holding on for dear life」가 붙습니다. 아래를 내려다보지 않고 눈을 뜨지 않고 아침 햇살이 들 때까지 잔을 채우겠다는 건 즐기는 자세가 아니라 버티는 자세입니다. 샹들리에는 파티의 상징이 아니라 떨어지지 않으려 붙든 것이 됩니다.
해가 뜨면 곡의 가면이 벗겨집니다. 엉망이 된 채 지금 당장 도망쳐야 한다고 말하고, 곧 수치가 온다고 두 번 되뇝니다. 밤의 과장과 아침의 수치가 한 바퀴를 이루고 그 바퀴가 다시 돌아간다는 것, 이 곡이 중독을 다루는 방식은 그 순환을 설명하지 않고 그대로 돌려 보여 주는 데 있습니다.
시아는 이 곡을 Jesse Shatkin과 함께 썼고, 처음에는 자기가 부를 생각이 아니라 리아나나 비욘세에게 줄 곡으로 만들었다고 알려져 있습니다. 그 무렵 그녀는 솔로 활동을 접고 리아나의 「Diamonds」, 데이비드 게타의 「Titanium」 같은 곡을 써 주는 작곡가로 지내던 참이었습니다. 결국 직접 부르기로 하면서도 얼굴은 계속 감췄고, 발매 뒤 방송 무대마다 카메라를 등지거나 가발로 얼굴을 가린 채 노래하는 방식이 그대로 굳었습니다.
2014년 3월 17일 6집 『1000 Forms of Fear』의 선공개 싱글로 나온 이 곡은 빌보드 핫 100 8위에 올라 시아의 첫 솔로 톱 10이 됐고, 프랑스와 폴란드에서는 1위를 차지했습니다. 시아와 Daniel Askill이 공동 연출하고 Ryan Heffington이 안무한 뮤직비디오에서는 당시 열한 살이던 매디 지글러가 시아의 금발 단발 가발을 쓴 채 텅 빈 아파트를 뛰어다닙니다. 이 영상은 유튜브 조회 28억 회를 넘겼습니다. 곡은 제57회 그래미에서 올해의 노래, 올해의 레코드, 최우수 팝 솔로 퍼포먼스, 최우수 뮤직비디오 네 부문 후보에 올랐습니다.
