한 번만 더 춰 달라는 말이 칭찬으로만 들리지 않는 자리가 있습니다. 이 곡의 화자는 그 자리에 아주 오래 서 있던 사람입니다. 정작 1절은 화자의 말이 아니라 남들의 말로 채워집니다. 「Oh my God, I see the way you shine」이라며 다가와 손을 잡고, 지나가던 사람을 그 자리에 못 박아 세우고, 결국 「I beg to see you dance just one more time」으로 끝나는 목소리입니다. 감탄과 요구가 한 문장 안에 붙어 있다는 점이 이 곡의 출발점입니다.
2절에서 시점이 뒤집힙니다. 「Just like a monkey, I've been dancin' my whole life」라고 화자가 자기 자리를 스스로 밝히는 순간, 앞의 찬사는 구경거리에 대한 요청이었다는 것이 드러납니다. 후렴의 「And when you're done, I'll make you do it all again」은 부탁이 아니라 통보입니다. 끝났다고 생각하는 쪽은 춤추는 사람이고 끝을 정하는 쪽은 보는 사람이라는 관계가, 반복되는 구호 안에 그대로 굳어 있습니다.
토니 왓슨이 호주에서 거리 공연을 하던 시절에 쓴 곡입니다. 본인은 이 곡에 대해 「I wrote this song when I was busking, and about the pressure that I felt to always be entertaining people on the street」라고 밝힌 바 있습니다. 2019년 5월 10일에 나왔고 EP 「The Kids Are Coming」에 실렸으며 프로듀서는 콘스탄틴 커스팅입니다. 목을 좁게 조이듯 뽑아내는 특유의 창법이 우스꽝스러움과 피로를 동시에 만들어 냅니다.
결과는 곡의 내용을 그대로 재연했습니다. 30개국이 넘는 나라에서 정상에 올랐고 호주 ARIA 싱글 차트에서 24주, 영국 싱글 차트에서 11주 동안 1위를 지켰으며 빌보드 핫 100에서는 4위까지 올랐습니다. 여성 아티스트의 곡으로는 처음으로 스포티파이 30억 스트리밍을 넘겼고 샤잠에서 역대 가장 많이 검색된 곡 기록도 세웠습니다. 정작 토니 왓슨 본인은 이 곡을 두고 상당 부분 싫어한다고 말한 적이 있는데, 원숭이처럼 같은 춤을 계속 요구받는 처지를 노래한 곡이 그 요구를 세계 규모로 키워 준 셈입니다.
