곡 소개
「기생수 세이의 격률」의 오프닝 곡입니다. 2014년 10월 8일부터 이듬해 3월 25일까지 24화로 방영된 이 애니메이션에서 곡은 매회 문을 열었고, 싱글은 2015년 1월 7일 발매돼 오리콘 주간 3위에 올랐습니다.
가사는 처음부터 끝까지 하나의 질문을 붙잡습니다. 우리는 인간이라는 것만으로 이미 재능을 받았고 절대적인 포식자이며 천적조차 없다는 선언으로 시작하지만, 곧 그 자리를 다른 동물의 시선에 넘깁니다. 언젠가 저들을 쓰러뜨리겠다고 생각하며 우리를 지켜보는 존재가 있을지도 모른다는 문장이 붙는 순간, 승자 선언은 불안한 자기 확인으로 뒤집힙니다. 매슬로의 다섯 단계를 인용해 인간이 왜 약한 몸으로도 먹이사슬 꼭대기에 남아 있는지 설명하는 대목에서도 결론은 지능이 아니라 탐욕입니다.
그 논리 위에 일본어 두 구절이 얹히면서 곡의 온도가 바뀝니다. 홀로 울고 있던 옆 사람이 말을 걸어 왔기에 우리는 서로 기대어 살아간다는 문장, 그리고 늘 같은 아침이 네 눈에 비치고 흐르던 눈물이 사라져 간다는 문장. 원숭이와 다르다는 걸 증명해 보라고, 바라는 것이 없다면 인간은 어떤 의미로는 죽은 것이라고 몰아붙이던 노래가 마지막에 요구하는 건 정답이 아니라 목소리입니다. 「Let me hear」라는 반복이 제목이 된 이유가 거기에 있습니다. 밴드 측은 인간과 기생 생물이 가치관을 달리한 채 함께 살아간다는 원작의 설정을 중요하게 보고 공생을 축으로 가사를 썼다고 밝혔습니다.
Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas는 2008년 고베에서 결성된 밴드로, 이름은 테리 길리엄의 1998년 영화에서 따왔습니다. 포스트 하드코어를 바탕에 두고 오토튠 보컬과 신시사이저, 트랜스 계열 전자음을 얹는 구성이 특징이라 절규와 댄스 음악이 한 곡 안에서 계속 자리를 바꿉니다. 인간이라는 종을 두고 벌이는 이 곡의 논쟁이 한 목소리로 흘러가지 않고 클린 보컬과 스크림이 번갈아 받아치는 형태로 굴러가는 것도 그 구조 덕입니다. 「Let Me Hear」는 이후 2015년 9월 30일 나온 앨범 「Feeling of Unity」에 수록됐고, 그 앨범은 오리콘 주간 2위로 밴드의 상업적 도약을 알렸습니다.
