비가 내리기 시작한 밤, 화자는 침실에서 오지 않을 사람을 기다립니다. 「I have a story to tell」로 말문을 열고 「Do you hear me tonight」이라고 묻지만, 그 물음이 닿아야 할 상대는 이미 그 자리에 없습니다. 「Now, it is starting to rain」과 함께 빗줄기가 눈물로 겹쳐지고 마음이 무거워진다는 진술이 이어지며 곡의 온도가 정해집니다.
감춰져 있던 사정은 후반에야 드러납니다. 「If you are still alive」라는 가정법 한 줄이 놓이는 순간, 앞서 나온 기다림과 사과가 모두 이미 늦은 말이었음이 밝혀집니다. 화자는 네 잘못이 아니었다고 말하고 싶었지만 두 사람에게는 너무 늦었다고 인정하고, 「Some doubts broke me down」처럼 자신을 무너뜨린 것이 결국 의심이었다고 털어놓습니다.
