곡 소개
과거로 이어진 길을 되짚어 내려가, 나무의 손에서 금단의 열매를 훔치는 장면으로 시작합니다. 껍질을 물어뜯고 미지근한 고름을 들이켠 화자는 어느새 자기가 경멸하던 그 사람이 되어 있습니다. 그리고 곡 전체를 지탱하는 한 마디가 후렴마다 되돌아옵니다. Lament, 애가입니다. 화자는 계속 따져 묻습니다. 내가 말하기를 바랐다면, 생각하기를 바랐다면, 우리 꿈을 이어가기를 바랐다면 어째서 내 목소리를 더듬게 만들었느냐고.
한국의 인디 게임 스튜디오 프로젝트 문이 만든 『Limbus Company』의 테마송입니다. 곡은 2021년 12월 21일 사이하테 레코즈에서 먼저 나왔고, 게임 자체는 2023년 2월 27일에야 정식 출시됐습니다. 2021년 11월 첫 트레일러가 공개되던 시기에 곡이 게임보다 한참 앞서 세상에 나온 셈입니다. Mili는 이미 같은 스튜디오의 전작 『Library of Ruina』에 곡을 제공한 인연이 있었습니다.
게임의 장치를 알고 들으면 가사가 다르게 읽힙니다. 머리가 불타는 시계로 바뀐 단테는 열두 명의 수감자와 함께 폐허가 된 로보토미 코퍼레이션 지부를 돌며 황금가지를 회수하는데, 시곗바늘을 되돌려 죽은 동료를 되살릴 수 있지만 그때마다 견디기 힘든 고통을 치릅니다. 「Tick, tick, tock」과 「Counter-clock we rose / Counter-clock we reload」, 그리고 「Each loop we live through」가 뒷부분에서 「Each loop we die through」로 뒤집히는 대목이 전부 그 되감기를 그대로 노래합니다. 단테와 안내자 베르길리우스라는 이름은 『신곡』에서 왔고, 수감자들 이름도 이상, 파우스트, 돈키호테, 뫼르소, 히스클리프, 이슈메일, 그레고르처럼 전부 문학에서 끌어온 것들입니다.
곡이 끝내 도달하는 곳은 구원이 아니라 인식입니다. 「Then I realized someone's heaven / Could be the source of my torment」, 누군가의 천국이 내 고통의 근원일 수 있다는 자각이고, 그래서 지옥에 사는 것은 선택이 아니라 기본값이 됩니다. 마지막 물음은 어째서 가장 폭력적인 자를 챔피언 자리에 앉혔느냐이며, 곡은 「Reviving each other in this hell」로 닫힙니다. 우리가 스스로 지은 지옥에서 서로를 되살린다는 그 문장이 게임의 부활 장치와 정확히 같은 자리에 놓입니다.
Mili는 2012년 결성된 일본 거점의 음악 그룹으로, 보컬 Cassie Wei와 작곡과 기타를 맡은 Yamato Kasai가 중심입니다. 리듬게임 Deemo와 Cytus, 애니메이션 『고블린 슬레이어』 오프닝 「Rightfully」, 게임 『ENDER LILIES』 전곡 등 게임과 애니메이션 쪽 작업이 두텁습니다. 이 곡은 작곡에 Yamato Kasai와 Cassie Wei, 작사에 Cassie Wei가 이름을 올렸고, 보컬로는 MYTH & ROID의 KIHOW가 피처링으로 참여했습니다.
