곡 소개
가창자로 적힌 mpi는 해외 보컬리스트가 아니라 일본의 작사가 겸 번역가입니다. 뉴욕에서 5년을 지낸 뒤 돌아와 사와노 히로유키가 만드는 곡의 영어 가사를 쓰는 일을 해 왔고, 자기가 쓴 가사를 직접 부르기도 합니다. 이 곡이 그 몇 안 되는 경우로, 작곡과 편곡은 사와노 히로유키가, 가사와 노래는 mpi가 맡았습니다.
제목의 reluctant heroes는 마지못한 영웅들, 영웅이 될 생각이 없었는데 떠밀린 사람들을 가리킵니다. 가사는 그 떠밀림의 원인을 평화에서 찾습니다. 「The peaceful times have made us blind」. 하루하루 날이 무뎌졌고 우리가 어떻게 살아왔는지조차 잊었다는 진술이 곡의 출발점입니다. 벽 안이 안전했기 때문에 벽 밖을 보지 않게 되었다는 뜻입니다.
화자는 영웅이 아니라 방에 숨는 쪽입니다. 돌아볼 수도 없고 그들은 돌아오지 않으며 겁먹어서도 안 되는데, 그러면서 몇 번이고 다시 방에 숨는다고 되뇝니다. 그 자리에 예전에 들었던 말이 끼어듭니다. 「So you can't fly if you never try」. 시도하지 않으면 날 수 없다고 말해 준 사람은 이미 문을, 벽을 넘어 나가 버렸고 그래서 그 말은 어느 때보다 실감이 됩니다.
후반부는 애도로 넘어갑니다. 슬픔의 날도 처음 만난 날도 함께 꿈꾸던 날도 전부 아프게만 떠오르는 이유를 화자는 한 줄로 정리합니다. 「Because nobody wants to die too fast」. 남은 사람이 할 수 있는 일은 노래를 바치는 것뿐이라, 곡은 「Song for the reluctant heroes」와 「I wanna be brave like you」를 번갈아 되뇌며 끝납니다. 용감해지겠다는 선언이 아니라 당신처럼 용감해지고 싶다는 소망에서 멈추는 것이 이 곡의 정직한 지점입니다.
2013년 애니메이션 『진격의 거인』을 위해 만들어진 곡으로 같은 해 6월 28일 나온 오리지널 사운드트랙에 실렸습니다. 본편에서는 3화와 9화에 삽입곡으로 흘렀고 이후 극장 총집편과 외전 애니메이션에도 다시 쓰이며, 오프닝도 엔딩도 아닌 자리에서 시리즈를 대표하는 보컬 곡으로 남았습니다.
